چکیده

We analyze the rate of survival of hybrid seed corn in the U.S. market between 2000 and 2007 and ind that product characteristics and market structures have signi icant impacts. The results suggest that survival rates depend on spillover effects of learning regarding genetically modi ied seeds and close substitute seeds and that hybrids planted in the Corn Belt survive longer in the market than hybrids planted in other parts of the country. Given increasing concentration in seed and agricultural biotechnology sectors, our results shed light on factors that affect the survival of hybrid corn seeds under various market conditions.

GM vs . Non - GM : A Survival Analysis of Hybrid Seed Corn in the US

We investigate the survival of new seeds in the US hybrid corn seed market between 2002 and 2007. Controlling geographic location, we find that product characteristics and market structure variables have significant impacts on the hazard of corn hybrids. The results also suggest spill-over effects of learning among close substitute seeds, and a spatial pattern of survival: seeds in the center r...

Agronomic performance of insect-protected and herbicide-tolerant MON 89034 × TC1507 × NK603 × DAS-40278–9 corn is equivalent to that of conventional corn

Agronomic characteristics of genetically modified (GM) MON 89034 × TC1507 × NK603 × DAS-40278-9 (PowerCore™ Enlist™), MON 89034 × TC1507 × NK603 (PowerCore™), and DAS-40278-9 (Enlist™) corn, a non-GM near-isogenic hybrid, and 2 commercial non-GM hybrids were assessed in a field study to determine if the agronomic performance of the GM corn hybrids is equivalent to that of non-transgenic hybrid ...

Detection of genetically modified maize in processed products, dry grains, and corn ears intended for fresh consumption in South Brazil.

Conventional and genetically modified (GM) maize cultivars have been widely planted in Brazil to produce grains for processed food, feed, or to be consumed fresh as corn ears. This study used real-time PCR to detect GM maize in processed products and fresh commercial corn ears produced in the last two years in South Brazil. Eighteen conventional and GM maize cultivars were obtained from seed pr...

Performance of hybrid progeny formed between genetically modified herbicide-tolerant soybean and its wild ancestor

Gene flow from genetically modified (GM) crops to wild relatives might affect the evolutionary dynamics of weedy populations and result in the persistence of escaped genes. To examine the effects of this gene flow, the growth of F1 hybrids that were formed by pollinating wild soybean (Glycine soja) with glyphosate-tolerant GM soybean (G. max) or its non-GM counterpart was examined in a greenhou...

Labeling of Genetically Modified Foods

Whether or not to require labeling of food produced from crops that are genetically modified (GM) using recombinant DNA technology is a key issue in the ongoing debate over the risks and benefits of using biotechnology in agriculture. The U.S. government regulates GM food technologies, but once GM crops are approved they are considered to be ‘substantially equivalent’ to their conventional coun...
